Q: When should I schedule a fitting?

A: I book up several weeks in advance, especially in the Spring and Fall seasons.  You should get your appointment on the calendar now for fittings in the future, based on target weight goals, ordered dress arrival, etc.

Brides: I like to start your alterations 6-8 weeks prior to the event date. This is plenty of time for me to do your alterations, and close enough to the wedding, that hopefully, your weight won’t fluctuate too much and change the fit of the dress. I prefer that you are at your goal weight before beginning the alterations process so that the work doesn’t have to be done twice. If beading and lace have to be removed to alter the dress again because of weight loss/gain, then these alterations are subject to additional charges.

On average you will have a total of 2 appointments. Ideally, 6 weeks out and 3 weeks out. Sometimes, a 3rd appointment will be necessary to get all the alterations exactly right.

Bridesmaids/Mother’s/Prom: Your fitting should be booked 2-3 weeks before the event.

*Bridal Party rush fees will be incurred with less than 3 weeks working time.

Q: How long do alterations take?
A: This all depends on the complexity of the alterations. But generally 2 weeks to 6 weeks.

Q: What are Standard Alterations?
A: Hems, Shortening the straps/shoulders, Taking in the sides/seams, Adding Bra Cups, Adding Bustles. It is common industry standard that a gown can be take in about 2 dress sizes and still be considered standard. Anything more than that is more costly and will take additional time. Adding sleeves, layers of glitter tulle or adding panels to make a gown bigger also require more time and cost.

Q: What are your hours?
A: We are by appointment only. Generally speaking, 10-5 on weekdays and 9-Noon on Saturdays. You can book online, fill out the form on the Contact Page, or call or text (667) 758-0001. If calling during business hours, please be aware that I do not answer when with a client, so please leave a message so I can call you back between fittings. Thank you!

Q: Do you make custom dresses?
A: Absolutely! My background is in design and I would love to make you the dress of your dreams. This process must start at least 6 months in advance. I try to be as transparent as possible about materials costs, etc.—but, please keep in mind that custom dresses often cost more than one you can buy at a shop. I am making one dress, custom to you—not 100’s in a factory with lots of people. Please, contact me before booking online.

Q: Is there a charge for a fitting?
A: No! The first consultation and fitting times are considered part of the alterations process.

Q: Do you re-make/re-design Mother’s Gowns?
A: Yes! One of my absolute favorite things to do. Look on the Gallery page for a few examples. Or check out my Instagram/Facebook.

Q: May I get an estimate online or over the phone?
A: Because every dress is different and will be made to fit you, all quotes are given at the complimentary fitting consultation. I need to see how many layers the skirt has, how it was constructed, fabric & trims, etc., to give an accurate estimate. I only make you pay for the work that I am doing. I have researched pricing in the area and my prices are competitive. In general, you can expect your alterations to cost between $400-$1000, all depending on what we are doing with it and how complicated it is.

Q: Do you alter bridesmaids dresses?
A: Yes. I also do alterations for mother of the bride/groom and all evening dresses.

Q: Do you alter other clothing?
A: I only work on Bridal and Evening wear since it is so hard to find someone with this specialty and I often have to turn down Brides when I get booked up. Local dry cleaners can hem pants, replace zippers, etc. Thank you for your understanding!

Q: Do you make veils?
A: I do have some veil options in the studio available for purchase. If you want something very specific we can talk about it at your consultation.

Q: Can I bring people with me?

A: Absolutely! But, please know that it is a small space, so only 3-4 people can fit comfortably.

Q: What happens at each fitting?

A: At your first fitting, we will discuss the fit of the dress and the alterations you want done. You will be given a pricing sheet of the charges discussed.  If we both decide to go forward, then your dress will be pinned and kept in the studio to be worked on until your 2nd fitting.  The 2nd fitting will be scheduled before you leave.

At your second fitting, we will see the adjustments that have been made to your gown. If there are further alterations needed they will be pinned and a 3rd appointment booked. Otherwise, your dress will be ready to take home with you!

*****Q: What do I need to bring with me?*****

A: You MUST bring the undergarments/shape wear and the shoes you are wearing on your wedding day to the consultation/fittings. Anything that may affect the fit of the dress. Oh, and the dress, of course! :)

Q: Where are you located?
A: The Alteration Studio is located at 133 East Main Street, Suite 1C/E in Westminster, MD. Look for the brick building with the blue door. There is street parking on Main Street and also a parking lot behind the building off Winters street, in front of the tennis courts at City Park. For persons with disabilities it is better to come in/be dropped off at the front door on Main Street. The suite is located at the back of the hall when coming in the front door. When coming in through the back parking lot, go up the stairs to the first floor.

Appointments are available online. Please read the FAQ’s page and enter details about your dress and needs and the event date in the “Appointment Notes” box. You can also call or text (667) 758-0001 (text messaging rates may apply) for an appointment. Thank you!
